We employ over 3,500 employees worldwide. But what is it really like to work at EMR? Find out from some of our people.

Transport Manager – EMR Tyne Dock

Louisa's progress within EMR has been swift and reflects her passion for the transport industry, along with EMR’s dedication to upskilling their employees.

“After leaving the armed forces I held several roles, before eventually joining EMR as a Driver in 2013. Within a short space of time, I was promoted to the position of Transport Manager. The opportunity opened up earlier this year when EMR supported me through the CPC qualification.

“EMR is a busy company with a demanding customer base and some days can be a real challenge - no two working days are ever the same! If you can push yourself and want to take advantage of opportunities, then the support is there for you to make a rewarding career at EMR.”

IT Development Engineer – Head Office, Warrington

With a passion for IT, Ben's exposure to various projects at EMR has seen his knowledge of alternative functions increase.

“I think that EMR is a great place to work and learn and there have been plenty of opportunities for me. I enjoy the fast-paced nature of the work and the constant challenges set for me, but I also appreciate the assistance and support that’s available when I need it.

“My most recent opportunity from EMR has involved joining the Business Intelligence team. I originally joined the company as an IT Service Desk Apprentice and in 2014, I was given the opportunity to join IT Development. This was an excellent opportunity and has been the highlight of my career so far. My responsibilities have drastically changed on Business Intelligence – I am learning financials in great detail, as well as supporting the database structure and performance. I can’t see many places being as fulfilling as EMR.”

Trainee Manager – EMR Leeds

Nathan joined EMR four years ago as an Operations Apprentice; he now supports the Depot Manager at one of our busy sites in Leeds.

“My current role is wide-ranging and requires me to supervise the processing of metals from a wide range of sources. I’ve been exposed to all operations at our Leeds depot, including weighbridge administration, operating mobile plant and industrial machinery, as well as supervising the shredding process.

“My role is also customer focused; it’s important I carefully manage enquiries from the general public and our commercial points of contact, with the highest level of service. I’ve really enjoyed shadowing the Depot Manager and getting a deeper understanding of the commercial and operational performance of the depot.

“Getting involved with stock management and understanding how it contributes to the commercial success of the site has been really interesting. The management team have been supportive throughout my time at EMR, sharing their knowledge and giving me the confidence to progress and develop. I joined EMR straight from college and was a shy individual with little work experience; EMR has given me the platform to grow and take responsibility. I now pride myself on my organisation, communication and time management skills.

“EMR is a hands-on business, some days I have to get stuck in and it can get pretty dirty sometimes! But it’s a rewarding environment, where the company recognises your hard work and achievements.”

Marketing Executive – Head Office, Warrington

Rachel is part of the Marketing team – one not necessarily associated with scrap metal. The team has expanded over the past 12 months; a reflection of the importance EMR places on its customers.

“Since I started at EMR, the Marketing department has grown, allowing me to develop my knowledge, while being supported by a fantastic team. Working with such a helpful and experienced team has given me the confidence to manage my own campaigns and to get involved with a range of projects.

“We are encouraged to develop our skills and I completed a Diploma in Strategic Marketing, helping me to put marketing theory into practice in a professional environment.

“There’s always something interesting happening. As we operate over three continents, there are great marketing opportunities and a huge amount of activity to share with employees and customers.”

Transport Manager – East Anglia

Karen joined EMR as a Sales Ledger Clerk, but her dedication has been recognised over the years and she has progressed to become Transport Manager for East Anglia.

“My journey with the company has been varied and exciting. I have worked within a number of functions at EMR, as well as getting involved with an array of projects, which has culminated in me taking responsibility for Transport Operations in East Anglia.

“Working at EMR has exposed me to some wonderful people, both internal and external to the business. I have built some fantastic relationships with our customers and I love working with the drivers on a daily basis - there’s a real ‘family’ feel to the team.

“EMR has supported my development too – I recently passed the National CPC qualification. EMR is an incredibly forward-thinking company, it recognises honesty, integrity and hard work – all of which make it possible to progress and succeed. EMR will support and invest in individuals who (to keep it transport related) ‘go the extra mile’!”
