Meet Sean Hayes, one of EMR's drivers who help keep our metal moving.
I usually start work at 5:30am. The first thing I will do is get my PPE and check my schedule for the day. The planning team are amazing and make sure that my routes are ordered by distance and that my last job is always closest to home. My job sheet will have all the information I need, including the address, the skip size I need, the material I am collecting and where it needs to be dropped. Once I have all this, I will do my vehicle checks and then I am on my way. I usually have around four jobs a day but this can be less depending on the distance.
I have worked for EMR for around five years now but before I joined I worked as a teacher, supporting children with behavioural issues. This job could be really challenging and I would often take my work home with me. I had never thought about a career in transport, but a friend recommended that I apply for a job with EMR. Since then I have never looked back. It’s great to have a job where you are not taking the stresses of the day home with you.
Unlike most driving jobs, EMR offers flexibility around working weekends and gives you the option as to whether you would like to pick up extra shifts. Having two young children at home, this makes a massive difference and gives me the opportunity to spend quality time with my family. And of course the money that I take home is great too!
Traffic! There are many things that you can control in your working life but unfortunately traffic isn’t one of them. I am patient but I also like to be able to complete all of the jobs that I have been given. Sitting in traffic means that sometimes I am unable to reach the customer before they close and another driver has to take the job from me.
As a driver I can be the only EMR employee that a customer sees and as such it’s me that is representing the company. Therefore, I take a lot of pride in my appearance and I also like to make sure that my truck is clean and presentable. To me my cab is my office and should be treated in the same way.
I am part of an amazing team of genuinely nice people who are always there to help you if you need it. The team of managers and route planners go above and beyond to make sure that your day is as precisely planned as possible and that you have the tools you need to do your job. I couldn’t be prouder to be part of the team that I work with.
