Mike is a Plant Operative at EMR Liverpool Alexandra Docks, where he has worked for three years and believes that the MRGO Apprenticeship has given him a valuable insight into the metal recycling industry.
We caught up with Mike on the yard and asked him a few questions about his experiences on the course. Here is what Mike had to say:
“When I started at EMR I was relatively new to the metal recycling industry, so the MRGO gave me a great introduction to life on the yard. Throughout the course, I got an invaluable insight into different parts of the business and the legislation that surrounds the industry, as well as achieving my fire safety certificate and gaining my forklift licence. I was also able to achieve my English GCSE something that I had narrowly missed out on in High School.
“I definitely had some amazing support on the way. Adrian, a trainer at MET Academy, part of Mayer Environmental, really helped me out with my assignments. If I was struggling to grasp what the question was asking me, he would take the time to help me break it down into terms that I understood. My Area Manager, Scott, has also had a massive impact on my journey. He has shown a lot of faith in me and really pushed me to succeed.
“The MRGO is great for anyone starting out in EMR. Before completing the MRGO, I don’t think that I was capable of progressing through the business due to my experience and knowledge, but now I believe that I will be able to manage my own yard in the future.”
Mike hopes to continue his career with EMR and has ambitions to start a Level 3 Supervisor and Managers course.
