Metal Recycling General Operative (MRGO) Apprentice

David - MRGO Apprentice

Before taking part in the MRGO apprenticeship David had worked as a Plant Operative in the Fridge plant for five years.

We caught up with David to find out how he found the experience:

“The MRGO provided me with a great opportunity to develop the knowledge that I already had about the metal recycling industry, as well as allowing me to explore the many different roles available on the yard. I think the most valuable skill that I learnt was how to identify different types of metals, something that not only saves time on daily tasks but also helps me to do my job to the best of my ability.

“I chose to take the End-of-Life Vehicle Operative technical module and this was something I really enjoyed. As well as learning how to safely recycle a vehicle, which I had never done before, I developed an understanding as to why it is important to do this in an environmental conscious way, something that is particularly important when carrying out the depollution process.

“As well as learning practically on the yard, we were also taught in classrooms. This involved completing coursework that could sometimes be quite time consuming. Adrian and Steve, the trainers from MET Academy (part of Mayer Environmental), were a great support and always on hand to offer any help with my work, should I need it. Not only was I able to increase my knowledge as well as gaining a qualification, I really enjoyed being able to widen my professional network and get to know the other apprentices. This has given me the confidence to try new things and approach new roles within the business.

“I would highly recommend the MRGO Apprenticeship programme to anyone who wants to develop their knowledge of the metal recycling industry as a whole.”
