EMR, a global leader in sustainable materials, has been recognised for driving positive change in the communities where it operates at this year’s ATF Pro Awards.

At an awards ceremony held in Shropshire on 28 November, EMR picked up the coveted Community Impact Award. EMR was recognised for its exceptional work with schools, socially disadvantaged groups, and charities near its operating sites, as well as its initiatives to support His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service, giving individuals a second chance to build brighter futures.

By safely handling hazardous waste, reducing contaminants, and ensuring recyclable materials can be used again, EMR’s authorised treatment facilities (ATFs) play a vital role in creating a cleaner and more circular automotive industry.

Yet, EMR – the UK’s leading end-of-life-vehicle (ELV) recycler – believes its impact goes far beyond.

In 2024, EMR deepened its commitment to supporting education and young people, partnering with local schools to provide resources, career guidance, and support for socially disadvantaged students.

The company’s programmes focus on creating opportunities for individuals to gain the skills and confidence needed to achieve their potential. By inspiring the next generation, EMR is fostering innovation and helping tackle educational inequality.

The judges at this year’s ATF Pro Awards were particularly impressed by the company’s efforts to help care leavers, young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, and former members of the armed forces. Through significant investment in training, diverse apprenticeship options, and mentorship programmes, EMR provides pathways to stable employment and career development for those who need it most.

As part of its work with His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service, EMR also runs a pioneering Release on Temporary Licence (ROTL) scheme. This initiative enables inmates to gain valuable skills and work experience at nearby EMR recycling facilities, preparing them for meaningful employment upon release.

By offering stable jobs and supportive environments, EMR reduces the risk of re-offending, strengthening individuals and their communities alike.

Barry Flanagan, Head of Social Sustainability at EMR, said: “Everyone at EMR will be thrilled to hear that our business has won the Community Impact Award at this year’s ATF Pro Awards.

“This award recognises the huge amount of work that goes on at each of our sites to engage the local community, provide opportunities for ambitious young people, and support local charities and schools.

“As a family business rooted in the towns and cities where it operates, EMR has a longstanding commitment to support the next generation – especially those who haven’t always had it easy.

“Whether it’s through our partnerships with schools, our training and apprenticeship programmes, or the ROTL scheme, EMR is determined to make a lasting difference. I’d like to pay particular tribute to the teachers, community leaders, and our own teams who make this possible every day.”
