With state-of-the-art facilities located across the country, EMR is one of the most advanced and efficient end-of-life vehicle (ELV) recyclers in the UK.

In fact, up to 98%1 of every vehicle that arrives at one of EMR’s sites will go on to build vehicles, household appliances, trains and even homes of the future.

Whether our customers are drivers saying goodbye to a much-loved family car, businesses looking to upgrade their fleet or even automotive manufacturers, EMR is ready to assist.

And, the best part is that, as well as recycling your vehicle to the highest standard, we will pay a competitive price for it too.

As a family business with more than 80 years of experience in the metal recycling industry, we know just how important it is to deliver great service, no matter how many times you’ve done this before. That is why our sites have clear signage, directing visitors where to go once they have arrived.

Our friendly staff can talk customers through the process, answer any questions and make sure their experience is as simple as possible. And, if drivers cannot make it to one of our sites or a vehicle is no longer road worthy, our teams are also able to collect vehicles from your location and bring them to the local site.

EMR’s ‘no quibble’ approach means that if we have already provided a customer with a quote for their car, and it arrives in the condition described, we will always honour that price.

For business customers, meanwhile, EMR has a “no job too big or too small” guarantee, which means we have the capacity to adapt our service to any need. In addition, our commitment to meeting the highest safety and environmental standards means our customers can rest assured that their vehicles are being recycled in the most responsible way possible.

What happens once EMR receives a vehicle from a customer?

Utilising our advanced technology means the metals, plastics and even the fluids in a car’s engine can have a useful second life as part of a sustainable, circular economy.

The process begins by deactivating the vehicle by removing the battery. Then, our team depollutes the vehicle to remove any oil, fuel, brake fluid and screen wash. EMR’s authorised treatment facilities (ATFs) are registered with both DEFRA and the Environment Agency, and this is where we ensure that any hazardous substances are removed from a vehicle – and carefully disposed of – before it is recycled.

After this, vehicles are shredded in our state-of-the-art facilities, with magnets helping to remove any ferrous metals, such as steel and iron, which can be easily recycled. A range of advanced processes then help our teams to separate individual non-ferrous metals (including aluminium and copper), alongside recyclable plastics, foams, rubber, wood, and glass.

EMR has invested significantly in producing new, high-quality grades of recycled metals, which reduce the reliance on nature-depleting mined metals. The plastic we recover, meanwhile, is recycled by EMR’s plastic recycling division, MBA Polymers UK. The company’s three UK-based sites are among the most sophisticated recycling facilities in the world and further reduce the UK’s demand for virgin feedstocks.

While EMR is proud of its dedicated staff and market-leading technology, we also know that we can’t stand still. The automotive industry is being transformed by the development of new, high-performance electric vehicles (EVs) and, as these vehicles eventually reach their end of life, it is vital that there is a safe, sustainable, and efficient way to recycle them. That’s why EMR is working with OEMs, industry experts and academia to find ways to reuse, remanufacture or recycle these valuable batteries and safeguard the rare earth metals used to make them.

Our investment in the latest technology helps our customers contribute to a sustainable, circular economy that protects our planet for future generations.

Whether you’re a driver, a fleet operator, dealership, or manufacturer, if you have a vehicle that needs to be recycled, there is nowhere better to bring it than your local EMR site.
