Young people in Sheffield given boost through partnership between metal recycler and Whirlow Hall Farm Trust

31 May 2019

EMR, one of the world’s leading metal recyclers, which has two sites in Sheffield, has partnered with Whirlow Hall Farm Trust, an educational and environmental charity which supports local young people.

As part of the partnership, EMR has donated towards the trust’s 480 Scheme. The scheme enables the farm to provide residential support for disadvantaged young people from schools in the Sheffield area and helps fund alternative provision for young people at risk of exclusion.

Throughout the partnership, EMR is also fundraising and providing free advertising at its sites and is sponsoring the farm’s summer fayre in July.

Whirlow Hall Farm Trust, which is celebrating 40 years this year, is a charity that aims to inspire and nurture young people by getting them involved on the working farm. They learn about life on the farm, helping with real farm jobs such as picking raspberries or feeding the animals, and they develop their life skills, learning how to eat healthily and work as a team. They also take part in educational activities that cater to the National Curriculum.

Young people can benefit emotionally from working with animals on the farm, often growing strong attachments to them. The ‘Thera-pets’, as they are called on the farm, are used as a therapeutic outlet to share any problems the young people might have, discussing their feelings in a way that they might not be able to do directly to an adult.

Gavin Longley, Area General Manager at EMR, said: “At EMR, we put a great deal of importance on supporting the communities that are close to our sites, which is especially true in Sheffield where we have two sites.

“Whirlow Hall Farm Trust stood out to us as an organisation as it really makes a difference to the lives of young people in Sheffield. It is a fantastic concept; educating and providing emotional support to young people through working on a farm.

“We are extremely happy to be able to help a charity such as this and are looking forward to seeing the difference our support will make.”

Zoe Merryclough, Corporate Fundraiser for Whirlow Hall Farm Trust, said: “We’re delighted EMR have chosen to support Whirlow during our 40th anniversary year- we’re really excited about all the projects we’ll be working on together.

“We have a huge amount to offer local businesses including volunteering opportunities, corporate away days and fantastic events to sponsor and attend. There are fundraisers on hand to support staff with their own fundraising. The Trust relies heavily on donations and fundraising support and we need more companies to follow EMR’s lead to help us raise the funds needed to keep Whirlow Hall Farm here and helping Sheffield’s children for the next 40 years.”
