Lord Mayor opens transformed recycling facility

8 September 2017

EMR has recently invested around 10 million pounds in redeveloping its Duddeston Mill Road site. The 13 acre site which incorporates a mega-shredder was opened by the Lord Mayor on Saturday 2nd September at an event attended by some of the site’s key suppliers.

The redevelopment will secure around 25 jobs and supports a number of other associated businesses in the immediate area. The changes include new designated facilities for members of the public and tradespeople including a separate off-loading area for quick, easy and safe access.

Midlands Area Manager Sikander Aziz said, “The improvements will allow us to serve our customers quicker, in a yard they know will be welcoming, safe, clean and tidy. We’d like to thank the Lord Mayor for attending our launch event and officially opening the facility.”

One of the main site improvements was the refurbishment of a new mega-shredder, one of the largest in the country. It has the capability to shred around 3,000 tonnes of metal a day and can shred a whole car into fist sized pieces in around 15 seconds.

During her visit the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councillor Anne Underwood commented “It was a real pleasure to open this site. I was amazed at the scale of the operation and impressed by the fact that a leading edge recycling facility like this is based in the heart of our city.”

EMR has other sites in the West Midlands, including Coventry, Darlaston, Kingsbury and Smethwick and employs a further 290 employees in the region.
